ALLY SALLORT PLAYS HER DEBUT EP FOR LOS ANGELES
MOROCCAN LOUNGE — LOS ANGELES, CA
Indie-pop artist Ally Salort headlined a deeply personal and unforgettable show at the Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on August 14th. Salort has been on the rise since finding success online, where she has posted covers on YouTube and TikTok, behind-the-scenes moments, unheard demos, and original releases. This summer, she dropped her debut EP, Change of Plans, which highlights her penchant for storytelling and vulnerability through song.
Opening the show was Cleveland-born artist Emyrson Flora, who entranced the audience with beautiful ballads, setting the tone for a night of intimate performance. By the time Salort hit the stage, the venue was packed iwth fans bouncing to the beat as she opened her set with “Before and After,” a slightly more uptempo but self-aware track off of her EP. Those in attendance—several of whom flew in and traveled to attend—were in for a treat when she announced her third song of the night, unreleased track “Chameleon,” which many fans were disappointed to see missing from the EP. From reactions in the crowd, you could tell Salort had granted many wishes by performing the track along with the rest of the EP, which she played in its entirety.
One of my favorite songs of the night was “Horror Movie” which actually made it onto Change of Plans. Salort explained the track to be about “being dumb and in love” and going through doors that shouldn’t be opened. She also added that, if she were a girl in a horror movie, she'd be the one who dies first; a direct reference to the songs lyrics that describe love as a horror movie and her as “always the first one to die.” Another highlight was “Any Way I Can,” which continued the theme of heartbreak, this time with a sense of bartering, sacrifice, and compromise, with Salort explaining that it’s about being willing to take whatever someone gives you just for the chance to be in their life. Later, she gave us the chance to hear another unreleased song with “House Keeping” which fans were introduced to earlier this month when she “leaked” the demo on her TikTok.
Ally Salort’s debut EP is streaming now, and it is definitely worth a listen for fans of introspective, relatable, and emotional indie-pop music, this is a must-listen. For those in New York, she’ll be playing the Mercury Lounge on August 20th before heading to the UK’s Camden Assembly in London on September 4th. After that, she’s booked to play a show at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas, on October 10th ahead of her Austin City Limits slot on the 12th.
